A new report from Sports Illustrated indicates that bad news is coming for college football. According to Pat Forde and Ross Dellenger, a series of high-level meetings among the Power 5 conferences this week will likely result in postponing fall sports until 2021.
“It’s gotten to a critical stage,” one conference commissioner told SI after an emergency meeting. “I think all of us will be meeting with our boards in the coming days. We have work to do that is no fun.”
Another SI anonymous source offered a similar assessment.
“In the next 72 hours college football is going to come to a complete stop,” they said.
As was also reported in ESPN’s emergency meeting report, the Big Ten is reportedly moving forward with a decision to cancel the season and is gauging the rest of the Power 5 conferences on a uniform decision to be announced later in the week. Matt Jones of Kentucky Sports Radio similarly reported Sunday that the Big Ten informed the SEC of its decision and is looking for the conferences to make a uniform decision announcement.
The Big Ten and Pac-12 currently have calls with league presidents scheduled for Tuesday. Votes for postponement/cancelation could be made on those calls. The SI report notes that other conference calls among university presidents could be moved up as the situation has been developing rapidly since the MAC’s decision to cancel the season.
