The New Orleans Saints traded into the seventh round of the 2020 NFL Draft and selected former Mississippi State QB Tommy Stevens.

Stevens was expected by many to go undrafted, so why did the Saints feel the need to make the move? Well, according to the Saints, there may have been some illegal activity going on with other teams.

Per a report, the Saints claim the Carolina Panthers had an undrafted free agent deal with Stevens already in place before the draft ended, which would be a violation of NFL rules.

Per Pro Football Talk, the Panthers deny such a deal was in place:

“We didn’t have a deal in place with the player,” Panthers spokesman Steve Drummond told PFT via text message. “We had conversations like every other team.”

PFT also cited a league source who predicted that both teams would be punished for this incident. What those punishments would entail remains to be seen.
