Power 5 head coach is positive for COVID-19, won’t coach next game

With the COVID-19 pandemic still going on in full force in the United States, we’ve seen a number of college athletes test positive for the virus.

It was only a matter of time until the first Power 5 head coach caught it, and it was reported that it had, in fact, happened on Saturday morning.

Per ESPN’s Andrea Adelson, first-year Florida State coach Mike Norvell has contracted COVID-19 and won’t coach next weekend at Miami:

Florida State is off this weekend after losing at home to Georgia Tech last week. That wasn’t the start Norvell anticipated, as the Seminoles were expected to win that game.

Now, it seems unlikely FSU will be able to pull off an upset on the road next weekend without its head coach on the sidelines.

Norvell issued a statement after the test result came out, saying Chris Thomsen will serve as head coach while he’s away:
