Former Alabama LB Reuben Foster had a tumultuous off-season in 2018, and the 49ers LB spoke publicly for the first time Saturday at training camp.

To kick things off, Foster was arrested in Tuscaloosa on January 12 and charged with second-degree possession of marijuana, which was later dismissed after Foster participated in a pretrial diversion program. The next incident came on February 11 where he was arrested in Los Gatos, California, and charged with felony domestic violence, forcefully attempting to prevent a victim from reporting a crime and possession of an assault weapon. Those two charges were dismissed after the alleged victim testified that she made up the allegations. The possession of an assault weapon charge was also reduced to a misdemeanor.

All of this made Foster appreciate football a lot better, he said Saturday.

“It was a big learning experience,” Foster said. “I learn from every mistake, everything that’s said, all my flaws. I learned from a lot of things and just grew from it. It made me appreciate football a lot better. It was crazy, knowing that football can be gone. Being back on this field with my brothers and these coaches, man, is a blessing.”

The 49ers sent a clear message to Foster that their patience had essentially expired.

Hopefully for Foster’s sake, this off-season was a big enough learning experience to keep him grounded and out of trouble. He’ll still serve a two-game suspension after entering a diversion program for the marijuana arrest and pleading no contest to the weapons charge.
