The No. 22 LSU Tigers are coming off a gut-wrenching Week 6 overtime loss against the No. 15 Kentucky Wildcats, a game in which the Bayou Bengals squandered a late fourth-quarter lead.
Tigers’ star quarterback Sam Leavitt, who had been having a solid game, lost the ball on a sack fumble with under 5 minutes remaining, giving the Wildcats an opening that they eventually used to pull off the massive upset.
Leavitt broke down the costly fumble when talking to reporters on Wednesday afternoon, and the junior leader on Lane Kiffin‘s offense took full responsibility for the blunder.
“The fumble was brutal,” Leavitt said, per Tiger Droppings. “That one really stung just because of the situation. I really should have just scrambled to the right. I need to be a savvier player, not try to win the game on that play… I got to be that person, the catalyst for the team, especially the offense, and move on and not let things affect us like that.”
He also touched on his interception troubles so far this season, saying that there have been some “pretty unlucky situations” in that department, and that “sometimes that’s how the ball bounces.”
Leavitt and the Tigers still have an opportunity to make the College Football Playoff, but if they want to realize that goal in Kiffin’s first season, then he is going to have to be better at protecting the football over the next several weeks.
