Despite changes across college football’s conferences to limit their occurrences, field storming has seemingly gotten more popular over the years as fans look to celebrate major victories with a memorable trip to the playing surface.

Of course, the SEC has some of the harshest penalties when it comes to managing the action, and the league’s office had to doll out some more fines Sunday.

Following South Carolina‘s win over Tennessee on Saturday, the Gamecock faithful took over the field at Williams-Brice Stadium and celebrated accordingly.

That jovial moment comes at a $500,000 cost, as the SEC announced Sunday.

And ironically, due to the league’s rules, that payment will be made out to the Volunteers, who will now break even after being assessed a $500k fine of their own following their win over Alabama just last week.

The fine will be paid to Tennessee in accordance with Conference policy, which provides for a $500,000 penalty for violations involving access to competition areas in all SEC-sponsored sports.

The policy states that “institutions shall limit access to competition areas to participating student-athletes, coaches, officials, support personnel and properly credentialed or authorized individuals at all times.  For the safety of participants and spectators alike, at no time before, during or after a contest may spectators enter the competition area.”
