The SEC is already on an upward trajectory for football under Commissioner Greg Sankey but they’re looking to bolster their standing even more. The conference is looking to hire an Associate Commissioner for Football, according to a posted job listing.
The role will “provide leadership and oversight for football operations, policy, and stakeholder engagement” and also “serves as the Conference’s primary liaison to head football coaches, football administrators, and national organizations”.
It’ll be interesting to see who the SEC hires for this position, which could be a stepping stone to eventually taking over for Sankey.
The 61-year-old Sankey has been the SEC’s commissioner since 2015. Sankey, who succeeded Mike Slive, is the eighth commissioner in the history of the SEC.
Since Sankey has been commissioner, the SEC has captured 6 football national titles (Alabama 3, Georgia 2, LSU 1). Currently, there’s 11 SEC programs in the AP poll: No. 3 LSU, No. 5 Georgia, No. 8 Texas, No. 10 Texas A&M, No. 11 Oklahoma, No. 13 Ole Miss, No. 14 Alabama, No. 15 Tennessee, No. 20 Vanderbilt, No. 22 Auburn, and No. 23 Missouri.
Sankey took over as the SEC’s associate commissioner in 2002 after the conference was dealing with compliance issues. Sankey, who lives in Birmingham, Alabama, is also the co-chair of the NCAA transformation committee.
