Shane Beamer and South Carolina raced out to a 14-0 lead against Tennessee on Saturday. As been the case for much of the season, the Gamecocks saw an early double-digit lead evaporate as Tennessee stormed back to take a 21-17 lead to the half.

As he was heading to the locker room, Beamer said on his halftime interview that his defense was soft.

โ€œWe need to figure out a way to stop them. We ainโ€™t stopped them yet,” Beamer said. “They are running it down our throats. We look soft. We need to figure out a way to look hell of a lot more physical on defense than we looked like in the first half.โ€

The Volunteers’ three scoring drives in the first half were 18, 10 and 7 plays, and the Volunteers were able to extend many drives on third down.

He was frustrated by the inability to stop the running game of DeSean Bishop, who entered the game with three consecutive games of at least 138 yards. During that stretch, he has 517 rushing yards and six touchdowns, helping backup quarterback George MacIntyre manage the offense.

South Carolina is hoping to avoid falling to 1-4 in SEC play on the season. On the other side, the Vols need a victory to keep pace in the race for a CFP berth.
