Shane Beamer identifies key area of improvement for South Carolina in 2023
Shane Beamer identified an important area of improvement for South Carolina at SEC Media Days on Thursday.
During his opening statement, Beamer said the Gamecocks have been ranked last in the SEC in turnovers over the past 2 seasons. He indicated that will be a focus as South Carolina prepares for fall camp over the next few weeks.
“It’s two years in a row that our offense has been last in the SEC in turning the ball over,” Beamer said. “That starts with me as the head football coach.”

"We also have to be better at running the football and stopping the run."

South Carolina turned it over a whopping 27 times in 2022 — 5 more giveaways than any other SEC program. That total includes 13 fumbles and 14 interceptions. For context, Tennessee — who led the SEC in this department a year ago — turned it over just 11 times total in 2022.
Quarterback Spencer Rattler will also be tasked with making adjustments to fix the Gamecocks’ turnover-prone offense. He threw 12 interceptions last season and had 4 games with multiple picks.
If South Carolina can fix its turnover woes, it could take a big step forward on offense in 2023. The Gamecocks finished 8th in the SEC last year with 5.92 yards per play.
South Carolina will open the season against North Carolina on Sept. 2.
