A border football series that began in 1903 is once again going on hiatus, as South Carolina announced the cancellation of a home-and-home series against North Carolina.
The series, which debuted with the Tar Heels upending the Gamecocks 17-0 in Columbia back in 1903, was last played in 2023 โ with then-No. 21 North Carolina downing South Carolina 31-17 in Charlotte.

North Carolina leads the series 36-20-4. Both the SEC and ACC are moving to nine-game conference schedules in 2026, leading to the cancellation. The Tar Heels were scheduled to play at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia on Sept. 2, 2028, with the Gamecocks making the return trip to Kenan Memorial Stadium in Chapel Hill on Sept. 1, 2029.
In a related move, South Carolina has added Bowling Green to its 2028 schedule โ opening that seasonโs slate in Columbia on a date to be determined. It will be the first time the Gamecocks and Falcons have met.
South Carolina opens the 2026 season on Sept. 5 at home against Kent State and then takes on Towson in Columbia on Sept. 12 before embarking on SEC play at home against Mississippi State on Sept. 19.
North Carolina opens the 2026 season Aug. 29 against TCU in Ireland (Noon ET, ESPN). The Tar Heels take on East Tennessee State at home Sept. 12 before beginning ACC play Sept. 19 at Clemson.
