The South Carolina Gamecocks have done a lot in their 119 years of college football. However, they haven’t done everything possible. Fans would love for them to check off the “SEC Champions” box sooner than later, but in 2028, they’re certain to knock two things off the list.
According to FBSschedules.com, South Carolina will partake in Week 0 for the first time when they host Bowling Green to open the 2028 campaign. The game will also be the Gamecocks’ first-ever matchup with the Falcons.
Per FBSschedules.com, the original contract for the Bowling Green-South Carolina contest had the game slated for Sept. 2, 2028. Despite this, the Gamecocks’ initial announcement of the game in May stated that its date was still to be determined. According to The State, there was an addendum in the contract that allowed South Carolina to move the matchup to Week 0.
With the SEC now having 9 conference games, teams would seemingly prefer to have an extra bye week (if possible) between its first game — usually against a non-Power 4 foe — and second one, which is typically a conference affair. Kentucky recently announced it would be playing in Week 0 each of the next two seasons. As South Carolina follows suit, it could become a trend amongst SEC schools in short order.
