Four years later, South Carolina‘s wristbands worn against Tennessee continue to be brought up in relation to the Gamecocks’ win over the Volunteers.
On Saturday night, after South Carolina made it two in a row over UT in Columbia (Tennessee won 2023’s meeting in Knoxville), the Gamecocks used the wristband conspiracy theory to troll the Vols. South Carolina’s social media team posted a graphic of a Gamecocks player sporting a wristband that simply reads “Cocks win.”

In 2022, South Carolina pulled off a stunning 63-38 upset of a Tennessee team that had its sights set on making the College Football Playoff. Volunteers fans made note that South Carolina wore wristbands for the first time all season in the Tennessee game, prompting theories that Shane Beamer’s team may have had some of UT’s signals.
With the SEC scrapping divisions and changing its scheduling model, Saturday was the first South Carolina-Tennessee game in Columbia since 2022. Before the game, South Carolina defensive coordinator Clayton White confirmed his unit would not be wearing them on Saturday.
“No, we’re not wearing wristbands this week,” White said. “That was a different era and a different time. It was good for some of the games that we did it.
“I still think it’s one of the funniest stories that’s out there in the world. But it was actually Cam Smith’s idea. I think our scout team that week had wristbands, and the offense was lining up really fast and running their plays. And actually, it was Cam Smith who said, ‘Coach, why can’t we get wristbands?’ And I put six plays on them, and I guess the rest is history.”
