Texas quarterback KJ Lacey received an uptick in 1st-team reps this week ahead of the Longhorns’ showdown with No. 7 Ole Miss. This comes amid struggles from Longhorns starter Arch Manning, whose struggles were partly to blame for losses to unranked Oklahoma and Florida across the past few weeks.
While Manning is still expected to start for the Longhorns on Saturday, all eyes are on Lacey as a potential option should Manning’s struggles continue. On Thursday, reporters asked Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian to evaluate Lacey’s week in practice.
Here’s what he had to say:
“KJ is a good player. I mean, he’s dynamic with the ball in his hands,” Sarkisian said, via CJ Vogel. “He’s a natural passer. There’s always things — nuances when you lack experience in practice, and we put him in some difficult situations. There’s some growing pains that come with that, but he’s coachable. He brings a good attitude every day. I think he’s got good rapport with his teammates.”
Lacey is a Saraland, Alabama native and a former 4-star prospect in the Class of 2025. He saw some action in the late stages of Texas’ win over Texas State earlier this season, completing 6 of his 7 passing attempts for 55 yards.
Could we see Lacey take the field on Saturday night?
