Steve Sarkisian takes shot at Texas Tech, Big 12’s strength-of-schedule
Texas coach Steve Sarkisian seemingly took a shot at one of UT’s former Big 12 rivals on Thursday.
According to OrangeBloods.com’s Anwar Richardson, Sarkisian was fielding questions from fans at The Touchdown Club of Houston when he was asked strength-of-schedule factoring into CFP selection committee rankings.
In his answer, Sarkisian reportedly chose to bring up another “team in this state that plays in another league,” presumably referring to the Red Raiders. He then said Texas could go “undefeated” while playing reserves if the Longhorns faced that team’s schedule.
Here’s Richardson’s full report, which he shared on social media:
Texas football coach Steve Sarkisian was asked by a fan at The Touchdown Club of Houston if there is any way to get the College Football Playoff Committee to factor in strength of schedule in their decision-making. Sarkisian said there’s a team in this state that plays in another conference that, if he played his 2s and 3s, his team would go undefeated, and they’ll make the playoffs this year.
That’s a bold claim from Sarkisian, particularly coming off of an 10-3 season that included a loss to Florida and narrow wins over programs such as Kentucky, Mississippi State and Vanderbilt.

However, Texas Tech’s 2026 schedule does seem to be particularly friendly for the Red Raiders. Only 4 other Big 12 programs are in SP+’s preseason top-30: Utah, BYU, Arizona and Kansas State. Of that group, the Red Raiders only have to play Arizona. That game against the Wildcats will take place in Lubbock.
