Tennessee fans are not happy with Josh Heupel following the Vols’ 37-20 loss to Alabama Saturday night.
It’s hard not to see where they’re coming from. There are definitely some holes, but Tennessee by and large boasts a talented roster that refuses to put one foot in front of the other against top-level competition. Especially on the road.
The Vols were penalized 10 times and failed to take advantage of their lone forced turnover, which set Tennessee up at midfield following a Ty Simpson fumble. Tennessee also decided to throw the ball on the goal line at the end of the first half, which led to an Alabama pick-6 and a swing of 14 points. Aguilar posted perhaps his worst game as a Vol, shown by his interception and brutal intentional grounding in the end zone in the first half, which ended as a safety.
This is nothing new for Tennessee, which is a concerning trend in year 5 of the Josh Heupel era. Penalties, miscues and poor playcalling have formed an unfortunate theme for Heupel’s teams in consequential games, especially on the road. Too often, Tennessee just seems wholly unprepared to play big games on the road.
Some fans put the entire blame on Heupel, and some seem more preoccupied with his coordinators. Here’s a collection of some of Vol Nation’s reaction to Tennessee’s disappointing loss to Alabama:
