Tennessee coach Josh Heupel will need to make a new hire in the coming days, according to a report.

Per CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz, Tennessee defensive backs coach Michael Hunter is expected to take a job on the Los Angeles Rams’ coaching staff. Hunter was hired by Jim Knowles just last month after spending the previous couple of seasons at Ohio State.

This is a big blow for Tennessee. The Vols made a big splash when they hired him as cornerbacks coach earlier this offseason. His previous experience working with Knowles was also certainly a plus.

Instead, Hunter will be heading to the NFL and the Vols will have to conduct an unexpected DB coaching search while most top candidates will have already committed to a program for 2026.

“I couldn’t be more excited about being here at Tennessee,” Hunter said in a statement after being hired by Tennessee. “Thanks to Coach Heupel and Coach Knowles for giving me this opportunity. I take great pride in building relationships with our players and helping them become the best they can be on and off the field.”

Tennessee will being spring practice on March 16.
