The Tennessee Volunteers’ football program would be what it is today without Gen. Robert Neyland. The then-34-year-old coach took the reins of the Vols in 1926 and led them to a sparkling 173-31-12 record over his tenure. Tennessee honored his contributions by naming its stadium after him. In Week 5, they’re taking their appreciation even further.

On Saturday afternoon, the Volunteers will debut their ‘Neyland Legacy’ uniforms vs. the Auburn Tigers. The grey helmet, grey top combination, according to the university, “pays homage to [Neyland’s] indelible legacy on Rocky Top.”

“The design blends elements from Neylandโ€™s head coaching career and the Tennessee uniforms that spanned his tenure from 1926 through 1952,” the university said in an August press release. “It pulls key features from multiple eras, embodying Neyland’s enduring impact from his military background to his tactical on-field and inspirational contributions.”

Tennessee shut out opponents in more than 50% of the games Neyland coached (112/216). His defense once shut out its foe in 17 straight matchups and 71 consecutive quarters, both NCAA records. The modern-day Volunteers are doing a solid impression of Neyland’s efforts, holding opponents to 14.8 points per game through four contests. Auburn and Tennessee kick off at 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday (ESPN).
