Key Tennessee staffer leaving Vols for running backs coach vacancy, per report

Tennessee and Josh Heupel will be replacing a key member of its staff, per multiple reports.

Vols senior offensive analyst Matt Merritt is leaving Tennessee to become the running backs coach at Georgia Southern. Merritt will be joining former Southern Cal head coach Clay Helton at Georgia Southern, as he continues to build out his staff.

Merritt is the former running backs coach at Elon, JMU and Ohio Dominican University. He was also an off-field staffer at Ohio State who had a hand in developing Buckeyes running backs Ezekiel Elliott and Curtis Samuel.

The former Vols staffer played college football at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio, where he rushed for over 1,000 yards and 12 touchdowns during his career.
