Former South Carolina star Jadeveon Clowney, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, has had trouble staying healthy during his brief NFL career.
The Houston Texans linebacker has shown flashes of brilliance when he’s been on the field, but those moments have been few and far between.
Texans GM Rick Smith said there’s nothing the team can do but hope this is the year Clowney finally makes significant contributions alongside J.J. Watt and the other Houston pass rushers:
โWhen heโs been on the field, heโs been pretty disruptive, pretty impactful,โ Smith said, via the Houston Chronicle. โItโs just that he has suffered some injuries, which you would hope is that heโs already had as many as he needs to have, right? Just from a standpoint of luck, hopefully the guy has had his share of injuries and he will have an opportunity to play for an extended amount of time because I think what you see, when you see him on the field, you see productive play.ย Heโs going to work at that. Some of those injuries itโs not like heโs getting hurt because heโs not working. The nature of the injuries heโs had are not such that itโs an indicator of the guyโs not being conditioned or ready to play. Itโs just the nature of the game. Hopefully, heโs had his share of them and heโll be on the field consistently.โ
Clowney played in 13 games for the Texans last season, recording 4.5 sacks and forcing a fumble.
