Texas is gearing up for a highly anticipated 2025 season, and a lot of that anticipation comes from the quarterback position. However, the Longhorns added another piece to the QB room on Sunday with Steve Sarkisian landing a transfer player who started in the Sun Belt last season.

That player is Matthew Caldwell, with Matt Zenitz and Chris Hummer with CBS Sports/247 Sports reporting Caldwell’s signing with Texas. Caldwell appeared in 10 games for Troy last season, starting the final 5 of the year after ascending into the starting role.

By all accounts, former 5-star recruit and legendary prospect Arch Manning is primed to be this year’s starter for Texas after 2 seasons waiting his time, including the 2024 season as the primary backup to Quinn Ewers. However, Caldwell actually enters the picture as the most experienced option in Texas’s QB room.

Last season, Caldwell threw for 1,608 yards on a 63.2% completion percentage with 18 total touchdowns and interceptions. He began his career with 3 games at Jacksonville State in the 2021 season before spending 2022-23 at the FCS level with Gardner-Webb. During his time at Gardner-Webb, Caldwell threw for just over 1,000 yards with 6 touchdowns.

While the starting job is Manning’s barring injury, the lack of experience behind him likely necessitated that Texas add some insurance at the position. That’s what Caldwell brings to the table with one season of eligibility remaining.
