Texas A&M pyrotechnics accidentally sets off sprinklers in tunnel before Aggies-Sun Devils

A pyrotechnic box, used in the Texas A&M Aggies‘ pregame entrance to Kyle Field, malfunctioned during testing this morning, according to KBTX Sports. The malfunction occurred before the Aggies or Arizona State Sun Devils arrived at Kyle Field for today’s game.
Per KBTX’s Rusty Surrette, “accidental flame discharge from a pregame pyrotechnic box triggered fire sprinklers inside a Kyle Field tunnel Saturday morning, hours before Texas A&M kicked off against Arizona State.”
“There was an accidental flame emission from one of the boxes in the south tunnel,” a Texas A&M spokesperson said, per Surrette. “The incident was quickly resolved, and no one was injured.”
According to Surrette, witnesses said, “the equipment discharged while staged in the tunnel, waiting to be positioned for the teamโs entrance.” Surrette added, “the stadiumโs fire suppression system activated immediately, preventing any visible structural damage.”
Kyle Field has been the Aggies’ home since 1904. Construction on the first concrete stands at the venue began in 1927. Texas A&M added artificial turf in 1970 but returned to natural grass in 1996. The university renovated the stadium in 2014 & 2015, increasing seating capacity from 82,589 to 102,733. The Aggies’ largest-ever crowd came back on Oct. 11, 2014, when they faced the Ole Miss Rebels.
