Texas appears to be pulling ahead in the race to land 5-star running back Derrek Cooper.

Recruiting insider Steve Wiltfong has filed a prediction for the Longhorns to land Cooper over Georgia and other top programs. Cooper previously announced a group of finalists that also included Ohio State, Florida State and Miami.

Cooper is set to announce his commitment on Sunday evening at 7 p.m. ET.

Cooper has established himself as one of the very best high school recruits in the country regardless of position. He’s the No. 29 overall player and the No. 2 running back in the nation for the class of 2026, per 247Sports Composite rankings.

He attends a top high school football program in south Florida — Chaminade-Madonna in Hollywood, Fla. Ohio State star receiver Jeremiah Smith is a recent alum of Chaminade-Madonna.

If Texas does land Cooper, it would represent another big recruiting win for the Longhorns over Georgia. Texas currently has 20 commitments in the class of 2026 and the No. 7-ranked class nationally, per 247Sports Composite rankings. Cooper would be Texas’s first running back commit in this class.
