Good news for Texas high school football fans, while the sport has been delayed, the Lone Star State is planning to play football in the fall.
In the state of Texas, the University Interscholastic League (UIL) runs high school athletics. On Tuesday, the UIL pushed back the start of high school football practice until Aug. 3 for 1A-4A football and back to Sept. 7 for 5A and 6A due to the number of active coronavirus cases in the state.
While pushing back the start date isn’t ideal, the important thing here is Texas is planning on playing in the fall and hasn’t pushed the season to the spring.
Currently, the upcoming Texas high school football is set to begin on Aug. 27 with the state championships being held the week before Christmas for 1A-4A football, while the 5A and 6A season is set to begin on Sept. 24 with the state championships at that level set to take place in January of 2021.
“Our goal in releasing this plan is to provide a path forward for Texas students and schools,” said UIL Executive Director Dr. Charles Breithaupt. “While understanding situations change and there will likely be interruptions that will require flexibility and patience, we are hopeful this plan allows students to participate in the education-based activities they love in a way that prioritizes safety and mitigates risk of COVID-19 spread.”
