Hayward Howard Jr. is leaving his home state to play SEC football elsewhere.

Howard, a blue-chip defensive back from New Orleans, announced on Friday that he has committed to play for Texas.

Out of Edna Karr High School, Howard is listed as measuring 6-2 and 175 pounds. On the 247Sports Composite, Howard is rated 4-stars, the No. 11 player in the state of Louisiana, No. 33 cornerback and No. 407 prospect overall in the Class of 2026.

Howard was on the radar for many programs of note around the SEC and nationally. During his recruitment, he picked up scholarship offers from Auburn, Colorado, Florida, Louisville, Ole Miss, SMU, Texas A&M and Texas Tech.

Per Hayes Fawcett of On3, it came down to Texas, Miami, LSU and Florida State for Howard.

With Howard on board, Texas now has 6 players verbally committed for 2026. Howard said the Longhorns can expect a “dog” who consistently gives 100%. Texas fans can get a preview of what he brings to Austin by watching his highlights in the Hudl video below:
