Texas has its eyes set on big things in 2026, but on Monday afternoon the Longhorns scored a huge recruiting victory for the 2027 season by getting a commitment from 3-star linebacker RJ Hudson.

The 6-foot-1, 210-pound Hudson, a star at Varina High School in Richmond, Va., told On3 insider Hayes Fawcett of his decision to leave the state of Virginia and head to the Lone Star State for the 2027 season.

Hudson previously committed to Clemson, so he was prepared to remain in ACC country. But things changed for the linebacker, who has decided he’ll at least start his college career in the SEC instead.

With Texas in dire need of some depth at linebacker in its 2027 recruiting class, the Longhorns got just that on Monday, with Hudson becoming the 22nd commitment in Texas’s 2027 class. The Horns’ class is currently ranked 7th in the country, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.

After Clemson had seemingly nailed down Hudson for next season, Texas made a big push for the linebacker during the past couple of months.

According to the 247Sports Composite rankings, Hudson is rated as the No. 488 prospect in the Class of 2027. He’s also the 44th-rated EDGE in the class, with Hudson being classified as an EDGE by 247, and he’s the 14th-ranked player from the state of Virginia.

As Texas builds its roster for the 2027 season, there is work to be done in 2026. Here is what the Kalshi market is currently saying about Texas’s chances to take care of business as a big favorite at home against Mississippi State on Saturday night (7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN):
