Texas was tied 10-10 with Mizzou at halftime in Columbia.
One play in particular, though, could have been the difference between a tie game and a halftime lead for the Longhorns.
With the Tigers in possession at their own 32 and with 38 seconds to go until halftime, Austin Simmons threw a screen pass to Cayden Lee, who wrestled and fought his way to the 35 despite being wrapped up by several Texas defenders. The Longhorns eventually wrested the ball away from Lee and came up with possession inside the 20, which would have given them a shot at a short field goal at absolute worst.
Or so they thought. After review, Lee was ruled down by contact, and the Tigers were ultimately able to run the clock out and take the game to halftime. Here’s video:
With both teams at 6-2, this game may serve as a College Football Playoff eliminator for the Longhorns. They were ranked No. 7 in the initial CFP Top 25 on Tuesday and could find themselves out of the Playoff picture once and for all with a loss. Meanwhile, the Tigers, at No. 18, have games against Georgia and Kentucky remaining on the schedule. While a loss wouldn’t see their Top 12 hopes completely disappear, the road would get tougher.
