No. 22 Texas rallied for one of the most improbable victories in college football this season on Saturday night in Starkville. The Longhorns overcame a 17-point deficit in the fourth quarter and defeated Mississippi State 45-38 in overtime.
The game ended on a sack by Ethan Burke that jarred the ball loose from Mississippi State quarterback Blake Shapen that was recovered by Alex January. SEC Network announcer Taylor Zarzour made an emphatic call on the game-clinching play:
“What a miracle win at Mississippi State for the Texas Longhorns in overtime!” Zarzour said. “Steve Sarkisian’s team was down 17 in the fourth quarter!”
Texas scored the game-winning touchdown in overtime on a 10-yard touchdown pass from backup quarterback Matthew Caldwell to Emmett Mosley. Texas starting quarterback Arch Manning left the game on the first play of overtime after he seemed to hit his head on the turf.
Manning completed 29 of his 46 passes for 346 yards with 3 touchdowns and an interception before leaving the game. Texas held on despite a strong showing from Shapen, who passed for 381 yards, 4 touchdowns, and no interceptions.
Next up for Texas is a critical home matchup vs. No. 10 Vanderbilt on Nov. 1. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. ET from Austin.
