It feels like only yesterday that Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger had a bold message for Texas fans after a 28-21 win over Georgia in the 2019 Sugar Bowl, declaring the Longhorns were “back.”
Ehlinger’s comment after that win was a far cry from what he had to say after a 49-24 win over Texas Tech to get Texas on 7-5 on the season.
“Rome wasn’t built in a day. If you had told Texas fans three years ago that we would have seven wins and headed to a bowl game and had a chance to win eight, I think people would be pretty happy.
“Overall, we did a great job.”
In a season that had high expectations, those comments seem to be falling on deaf ears among fans and critics. Some of the early responses have not been favorable to the junior quarterback.

Sam Ehlinger’s not always the best to put season into perspective. Asked about 7-5, he said, “If you had told Texas fans three years ago that we would have 7 wins and headed to a bowl game and had a chance to win 8, I think people would be pretty happy.” Uh, no. Not so much.

Is this the same Sam Ehlinger that said Texas was “back” before this season started? https://t.co/3goH9O5KSS

Texas will head to an uninspiring bowl game, and if they win, it will be interesting to see if Ehlinger has the same message claiming Texas is “back”.
