A high-profile acquisition for 2026, Smothers arrived from NC State via the transfer portal. After making first-team All-ACC in 2025, Smothers was unable to find the same success in Austin for various reasons.
In 6 appearances for the Longhorns, Smothers has rushed 69 times for 283 yards and 2 touchdowns. His average of 4.1 yards per carry is a notable drop-off from his 5.9 yards per carry last year at NC State, where he recorded 160 carries for 939 yards 6 scores.
Raleek Brown, Texas’s leading rusher, has fared better for the Longhorns. Brown is averaging 4.91 yards per carry, rushing 92 times for 452 yards. He also has a team-high 5 rushing touchdowns.
No. 7 Texas faces No. 18 Mizzou on Saturday in Columbia. The Longhorns also have remaining regular-season games against LSU, Arkansas and Texas A&M.
