Texas Tech mocks College GameDay panel after big win over Utah
The Texas Tech Red Raiders were slight 3.5-point underdogs (ESPN Bet) to the Utah Utes this weekend. Despite this, the Red Raiders prevailed 34-10 over the Utes on Saturday. And they weren’t shy in letting people know about it.
Following the game, Texas Tech’s social media team pulled a screenshot of College GameDay’s picks. The program’s entire 5-man panel sided with the Utes ahead of Saturday’s affair, something the Red Raiders reminded them of once they sealed the win.
Texas Tech never trailed Utah in Saturday’s game. Head coach Joey McGuire’s team scored a touchdown on its opening drive, then added a 58-yard field goal with 48 seconds remaining in the first half to take a 10-0 lead.
The Utes snagged a field goal right before halftime to cut things to 10-3, and made it a 13-10 game early in the fourth quarter after Wayshawn Parker’s 5-yard run. But backup quarterback Will Hammond — replacing the injured Behren Morton — took just 4 plays to go 75 yards and find the endzone. His 24-yard touchdown pass to Terrance Carter Jr. stretched the Red Raider advantage back to double-digits and served as the first of 3 unanswered scores to end the game.
Hammond completed 13 of 16 passes (81.3%) for 169 yards and 2 touchdowns in relief of Morton. His impressive outing — which included 8 carries for 61 yards — should give Texas Tech confidence going forward, whether Morton misses time or not. The Red Raiders are on bye next week before traveling to Houston for a battle against the Cougars in Week 6.
