In a development that should surprise no college football fan, Alabama was ranked No. 1 in the first AP Top 25 poll of the season, which was released on Monday.
But the ranking is another case of Alabama being in a class by itself in college football. ESPN researcher Chris Fallica put it in perspective.
There have been 165 AP Polls since the start of the 2011 season. Alabama has been lower than 7th in the AP Poll for five weeks, and outside the Top 5 for a total of 11 weeks. In that span, Alabama has been No. 1 in 86 of them.
Alabama received 47 of 63 first-place votes, while the top 5 was rounded out by Oklahoma, Clemson, Ohio State and Georgia. Ohio State received a first-place vote, and Georgia received 3 first-place votes and rounds out the top 5.
Alabama’s 2020 team was arguably the best of the Saban era as it went 13-0 and knocked off Notre Dame and Ohio State en route to the national championship. Now the Tide is reloading after a slew of key players left for the NFL.
