TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama football team had two players land Southeastern Conference honors on Monday as junior linebacker Reggie Ragland was named the defensive player of the week and senior guard Arie Kouandjio won the offensive lineman award.
Despite playing with a hand fracture that required surgery last week, Ragland had a career-high 13 tackles including three for a loss.
“Ain’t really feel it too much,” Ragland said about the injury. “It was a real good football game. My hand’s fine. I’m anxious to get to this week and Mississippi State.”
Ragland’s tackles were second to junior defensive lineman Jarran Reed, who tallied 15, although 13 were assists.
“Jarron Reed is a monster,” Ragland said. “He’s hard to contain and when he’s on he’s on. The whole year he’s been getting better, I’ve been getting better, and we’ve got to continue getting better and read the things we’ve got to read.”
Alabama’s defense ranks third nationally in rushing defense, second in scoring defense and fourth in total defense.
Meanwhile, Kouandjio graded out at 92 percent to lead all Crimson Tide offensive linemen. He also had three knockdowns, with no hurries, no penalties, no sacks, and no pressures allowed.
The other SEC players of the week:
- Offense: Kyle Allen, QB, Texas A&M
- Special teams: Isaiah McKenzie, KR/PR, Georgia
- Freshman: Treon Harris, QB, Florida/Nick Chubb, RB, Georgia
- Defensive lineman: Lorenzo Carter, DL, Georgia
Earlier Monday the Alabama coaching staff named its players of the week: Kouandjio and DeAndrew White on offense, with Landon Collins, Brandon Ivory, Cyrus Jones, Nick Perry and Ragland on defense, and Reuben Foster, Adam Griffith and Cole Maaza on special teams.
