Trent Dilfer was part of a “Black Sunday” in college football. Dilfer was one of the three head coaches to be let go following the conclusion of Week 7. Oregon State axed Trent Bray before Penn State’s surprise firing of James Franklin. UAB then announced its parting with Dilfer.

On Monday, Dilfer took to social media to release a statement on his dismissal. The former NFL quarterback shared appreciation for the opportunity to be the head coach of the Blazers and the city of Birmingham.

UAB was Dilfer’s first college football coaching job. He previously coached at the high school level at Lipscomb Academy, a Nashville-area private school, from 2019-22. He was 44-10 over 4 seasons with Lipscomb, winning championships in 2021 and ’22.

At UAB, Dilfer posted a record of 9-21. The Blazers went 4-8 in Dilfer’s first season, followed by a 3-9 mark last year. They are 2-4 so far in 2025.

Dilfer, 53, is best known to football fans for his lengthy NFL career from 1994-2007 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Baltimore Ravens, Seattle Seahawks, Cleveland Browns and San Francisco 49ers. After his playing career, Dilfer became a media analyst, appearing on NFL Network, ESPN and FOX Sports 1.
