Trinidad Chambliss made what was perhaps the decision of the college football offseason when he opted to stay at Ole Miss in favor of following head coach Lane Kiffin to LSU.
With that all-important decision out of the way, Ole Miss gets its star quarterback for one more season in Oxford, keeping the Rebels in the national discussion. The Rebels enter Year 1 under promoted head coach Pete Golding, who served under Kiffin as the Rebels’ defensive coordinator since 2023.
As you can expect, Chambliss’ stay-or-go decision was a tough one. Kiffin put a lot of faith in Chambliss during the transfer QB’s first year in Oxford, leading to his quick rise and Ole Miss’s eventual CFP berth. Kiffin also recruited Rebels OC Charlie Weis to follow him to LSU, meaning there were “a lot of unknowns and questions marks” for Chambliss concerning his best offensive fit.
Here’s what Chambliss told On3 Sports’ Chris Low on Monday.
“I mean, there were discussions. There were thoughts, ” Chambliss said. “I’m not going to lie about that because you have to understand what my circumstance was. I had just transferred here. My offensive coordinator was Coach Weis. I had just learned that system. He was leaving, and they were taking most of the offensive guys. I didn’t know who was going to be our head coach at the time. I didn’t know who was going to be the OC. There were just a lot of unknowns and question marks. So, yes, those thoughts were there, but once we went with PG (Golding), it didn’t take me too long to decide. I was all Ole Miss.”
The Rebels are widely considered to be a top 15 team heading into the new season. The question is how long they’ll be able to prove they belong in a post-Kiffin era. Chambliss gives the Rebels a chance to do just that.
Ole Miss opens its season on September 6 against Louisville in Nashville.
