Now that Brian Kelly is out at LSU, the head coaching carousel has another piece for the media and fans to obsess over. A hot name on the rumor mill is Tulane’s Jon Sumrall.

Tulane is off to a 6-1 start, which has them currently in second place in the American Conference. This puts the Green Wave firmly in the fix for the Group of Five spot in the College Football Playoff. However, the 43-year-old Sumrall is warding off any speculation that he’s entertaining a climb into SEC.

“I get those questions because we’re having success. The coaching carousel isn’t even a thought. We’re in the mid-season phase,” Sumrall said. “Whatever people want to speculate, they can do that. UTSA has 100% of my focus.”

Sumrall is in his second season at Tulane. In his first year with the Green Wave, Sumrall led them to a 9-5 mark and a trip to the Gasparilla Bowl. Prior to Tulane, Sumrall was Troy’s head coach from 2022-2023, and led the Trojans to back-to-back Sun Belt Conference titles.

Sumrall does have SEC ties, as he played linebacker at Kentucky as well as having multiple stints on the coaching staff with the Wildcats. Sumrall was also a linebackers coach at Ole Miss in 2018.
