In the modern era of college football, many star upperclassmen face a difficult decision: depart for the NFL or stick around for an extra year to secure another massive NIL payday.

Star Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson was faced with this very dilemma recently, as reports surfaced that several major programs were offering the former Crimson Tide gunslinger upwards of $6 million to take his name out of the NFL Draft and enter the transfer portal instead.

Despite these massive offers, Simpson decided to remain in the NFL Draft, and he recently sat down with AL.com reporter Nick Kelly to explain why he’s turning down other programs and heading to the pros.

“There is no doubt in my mind that the last jersey I wanted to wear in college was the Alabama Crimson Tide jersey,” Simpson told AL.com. “I came there. I stayed there. The last thing I wanted to do was tarnish my legacy and go somewhere else where I didn’t go out of high school and I didn’t want to play. I love Coach DeBoer, I love the University of Alabama. I love the fans. I love everything about it. Hopefully in the draft whenever my name gets written on a card, they write the University of Alabama on there. It’s going to give me great pride.”

In today’s day and age, it’s very rare to see a player have such loyalty when multi-million dollar NIL offers are on the table, but Simpson is clearly a rare exception to this new norm.
