Ty Simpson reportedly had ‘secret meeting’ with Rams before No. 13 selection

The Los Angeles Rams shocked just about everybody in the country last Thursday night when they drafted former Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson with the 13th pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.
The Rams are locked into starter Matt Stafford next season and every season until the former Georgia quarterback decides to call it a career or — though this option appears highly unlikely — he leaves LA. For that reason, it appeared that Los Angeles would be set to draft some help for Stafford, whether it be in the trenches or an offensive weapon at receiver or tight end.
Instead, the Rams picked a QB who had a Round 2 grade according to many draft analysts.
On Monday, Simpson told ESPN radio’s Ian Fitzsimmons that he and the Rams had a “secret meeting” that the two parties agreed to keep under wraps, lest another team find out that Los Angeles was interested in Simpson and attempt to trade up to scoop him.
Notably, Simpson also told Fitzsimmons that this meeting included “hours and hours” talking football with Rams head coach Sean McVay. This goes against Simpson’s draft night comments, when he originally said he had only had a brief meeting with the Rams during Alabama’s Pro Day workout.
“We tried to keep this under wraps as long as we could,” Simpson said of the meeting, via ESPN. “It was something to where I knew they were interested, but they wanted to make it private and didn’t want people to know that they were interested. So, I had some secret meetings with Coach McVay, and I just was trying to be on script and do what everybody told me and not to tell anybody.”
Obviously, it appears to have been a productive meeting.
“And it was just football,” Simpson told ESPN. “It was just straight football. And it was like a kid in a candy store. Me and him are sitting there, and we’re just going back and forth. You can tell the obsession he has for the game, and you can tell the love he has for quarterback play.”
