Junior Ty Simpson is getting his first career start at quarterback when No. 8 Alabama takes on host Florida State in Week 1 on Aug. 30. The 6-foot-2 Simpson has a legend in his corner giving him some wisdom leading up to gameday.

Former Alabama head coach Nick Saban gave advice to Simpson going into the Crimson Tide’s season opener.

“He was like: ‘Hey, just play within yourself. Make sure that you keep your team out of negative plays and negative drives. He always said that if you end the drive with a punt, a kick, a PAT, a field goal then you’re in good shape. You’re not dead in the water,” Simpson said. “So I’m taking that approach and just making sure like hey I’m going to make sure that I march down the field and do everything that I can to move the ball forward and not go backwards.”

Simpson has thrown just 50 passes with 29 completions during his first 3 seasons with Alabama. The 22-year-old Tennessee native arrived on campus as a 5-star prospect with other offers from Tennessee, Ole Miss, and Clemson.

Alabama at Florida State is slated to kick off at 3:30 p.m. ET and will be televised on ABC.
