UCLA sets record-low attendance mark at Rose Bowl for game against Bowling Green

Chip Kelly appears to be slowly righting the ship in his fifth season at UCLA, but fan apathy remains an issue.

The Bruins opened their 2022 season at home against Bowling Green on Saturday, and UCLA fans apparently had better things to do.

How bad was the turnout? How about an announced crowd of just over 27,000, which is a new record low for the Rose Bowl.

UCLA posted an 8-4 record last season but the once-proud program won only 11 games total in the three previous seasons.

One can only help but wonder if the turnout is also indicative of UCLA’s potential and preferred move to the Big Ten, where geographical rivalries will be sorely lacking.

Will the fans come around this fall if Kelly and his team can string together some wins? Time will tell, but to call it a disappointing Saturday would be an understatement.

On the bright side, the Bruins do lead 38-17 roughly midway through the 4th quarter.
