The University of Alabama has a new president.

The UA community, including the Alabama Crimson Tide football program, is welcoming Dr. Peter Mohler to Tuscaloosa.

The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees today unanimously appointed Mohler to the position. He will assume the role on July 21.

Mohler brings 20 years of experience in higher education. He heads to Alabama from Ohio State where he served as executive vice president for research, innovation and knowledge. Mohler was OSU’s acting president in 2023.

Dr. Mohler is uniquely equipped to build upon The University of Alabama’s strong foundation and lead this institution into an even brighter future,” said UA System Chancellor Sid J. Trant in a released statement. “He is a champion for the power of public higher education to transform lives and communities through teaching, research and service, and he will advance our flagship mission through his bold, student-centered and visionary leadership.

Mohler received a bachelor’s degree in biology from Wake Forest University and a doctorate in cell and molecular physiology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was at Duke for a postdoctoral fellowship before joining the faculty at Vanderbilt University and then the University of Iowa.
