Urban Meyer tells Will Stein his advice for coaching a team after a big win

Kentucky pulled off an impressive upset last weekend at Texas A&M. Wildcats head coach Will Stein wants to keep the momentum rolling and avoid a letdown against visiting Group of 6 opponent South Alabama on Saturday.
The first-year head coach was a guest on The Triple Option recently and decided to pick Urban Meyer’s brain. Meyer is a 3-time national champion head coach who has dealt with all the highs and lows of college football.
Stein asked Meyer for his advice for coaching a team after a big win. Meyer shared that his approach was honed by conversations with a legendary head coach.
“Lou Holtz would call me every Sunday or Monday after a big win. He was my mentor. He would always remind me that’s when you coach them the hardest,” Meyer said. “Everybody makes the drastic failure, the dramatic failure of just jumping them when you lose. But everything’s fragile when you lose.”
Meyer stressed that it’s the head coach’s responsibility to manage the team’s motivation.
“When you’re winning, if you tell them to jump they’ll say ‘How high?’. Lou Holtz would call me every Monday after a big win and said: ‘You coach them and hold your staff accountable because everyone’s patting them on the back but they’re listening to you because you just went and beat A&M,” Meyer said. “So that’s my advice…Have a Tuesday like you’ve never had before.”
With a 2-1 mark so far, the 36-year-old Stein is off to a strong start in his career. South Alabama at Kentucky is slated for a 12:45 p.m. ET kickoff on Saturday (SEC Network).
