USC radio booth has puzzling reaction to Dante Moore slide, targeting call

The USC Trojans lost to the Oregon Ducks 41-27 on Saturday night even after Oregon quarterback Dante Moore left the game due to injury. Moore was hurt on a hit from USC linebacker Desman Stephens II, whose actions afterward did not show remorse for the action. Unfortunately, Trojan radio play-by-play broadcaster Pete Arbogast didn’t, either.
When analyzing the play, Arbogast stated multiple times that Moore did not slide prior to being lit up by Stephens. He maintained his stance even after watching a replay of the collision.
“[Moore] did not try to slide feet first. Stephens went in helmet first, but he kind of ran into Dante Moore, who ducked into that hit,” Arbogast said. “I saw him dive forward… it didn’t look like targeting.”
When fellow commentators mentioned Moore was “laying feet first,” Arbogast said that was because Moore was “spun around.” Analyst Shaun Cody seemed to dispute Arbogast’s claims throughout the entire interaction.
The projected 2027 first-round pick reportedly suffered a concussion from the hit, but fortunately avoided further injury. Dylan Raiola, who replaced Moore against the Trojans, will start while Moore is on the mend.
