Video showing Nick Saban’s retirement announcement to Alabama players revealed
When Nick Saban takes the stage in Alabama‘s meeting room at the end of a season, it’s usually to lay the groundwork for the next campaign. In early January 2024, it was to tell his players they’d be continuing their careers without him.
During ESPN’s Saban docuseries, the world got to see the moment Saban announced his retirement to his Crimson Tide. The seven-time national champion kept things relatively simple after taking center stage.
“I’ve always been 100% committed to Alabama, to each and every one of you in this room as players, to help you be more successful in life,” Saban said. “Last year, to be honest, I don’t feel like I did that to the standard that I want to do it. That’s not good enough for me. So, I’m gonna retire.”
“You know, I can’t live forever. I can’t do it forever,” Saban continued. “I love you all [and] want to help you every way that I can.”
Saban left the stage to a round of applause from his players.
Alabama’s did not win a national championship in Saban’s final season but did play in the Rose Bowl. The Crimson Tide also beat a No. 1 Georgia team in the SEC Championship, giving Saban the ninth SEC title of his tenure in Tuscaloosa.
