Von Pearson will miss Tennessee’s game against Oklahoma this Saturday. The JUCO transfer suffered a high ankle sprain injury in the second quarter of the Vols’ 34-19 win over Arkansas State this past weekend and was taken back to the locker room on crutches.

During his weekly press conference, head coach Butch Jones confirmed that Pearson would miss the game. However, he called the injury diagnosis “great news” compared to what was originally suspected to be more serious.

“Von Pearson will be out for this game and we’ll see how his body progresses,” Jones said. “He has a high ankle sprain. I just left Von and he’s in great spirits. The great thing is we anticipate getting him back here hopefully very soon. As you know, he adds a whole different dynamic to our offense, but also because he brings us a competitive nature that our team feeds off of.”

With Pearson’s injury, Jones expects to see an increased role for several other wide receivers to see more playing.

“The great thing is that wide receiver is one of the positions where we do have some depth,” Jones said. “But anytime you take an individual the likes of Von Pearson out of a lineup that’s a setback for you. Like I said, he’s been a great presence in our locker room and he’s extremely competitive. He loves football and has a smile on his face everyday. So I think we’ll miss that as much as his playmaking ability as well. It is a setback for us offensively, but I look at it as an opportunity for another individual to step up.”
