Western Michigan University president speaks to media following controversial finish at Michigan

Fans across the country believe the Western Michigan Broncos got hosed against the Michigan Wolverines on Saturday night. The Broncos appeared to pull off a stunning upset when quarterback Bryce Underwood’s Hail Mary went out of the back of the end zone. However, officials deemed there was one second left on the clock. That tick allowed Michigan to complete the ensuing Hail Mary and win 13-12.
After the game, Western Michigan president Russ Kavalhuna spoke to reporters about the controversial ending. He revealed he had a text exchange with Michigan’s president, and that the Broncos would speak with MAC commissioner Jon Steinbrecher about their options.
“I was able to text [Michigan president] Domenico [Grosso] and say that, ‘several folks are saying that there may have been an error at the end of the game.’ Maybe not. I’m not sure about that,” Kavalhuna said. “We’ll try to figure [it] out… we’ll talk to our commissioner and we’ll try to see if there’s anything that we can ask for a review on. Frankly, I don’t know if we can. But… this football team deserves a second look, if that’s possible.”
Kavalhuna was asked if he was “hoping” to get the result changed. He didn’t definitively answer.
“The reality is, the reason why we’ve implemented this kind of review is if it’s pretty clear that there was a mistake made, we try to fix it,” Kavalhuna said. “I can’t say that that’s what happened here. But, I can say that Western Michigan [and] Michigan are long friends.”
The Broncos host Monmouth in Week 2, while the Wolverines welcome the Oklahoma Sooners to Ann Arbor on Saturday, Sept. 12. Kickoff in the latter game is noon ET (FOX).
