Kentucky coach Mark Stoops named Penn State transfer Will Levis his starting quarterback on Sunday as the Wildcats are just shy of 3 weeks away from their season opener.

Stoops told reporters that he did it in part because Levis had clearly won the competition with Joey Gatewood and Beau Allen, and he wanted to announce it early enough to give Gatewood, for example, time to transfer if he chose.

“He’s been extremely efficient running the offense … His first throw in the stadium was a 65-yard TD strike. He has a lot of talent … he won the job,” Stoops said.

But after the announcement, Levin sent his first message to the Big Blue Nation.

“I’m so incredibly blessed to be given this amazing opportunity,” he said. “Words can’t describe how excited I am to lead this group of guys! Get ready for a great season, Big Blue Nation!”
