Will Stein calls Shane Beamer ‘a great coach’ following comeback win over USC
The Kentucky Wildcats (4-1, 2-1 SEC) pulled off a miracle win against the South Carolina Gamecocks (2-3, 0-3 SEC) in Week 5. Will Stein‘s team trailed 17-0 late in the first half on Saturday, but overcame the deficit to triumph 35-34 in overtime.
Postgame, Stein’s focus was less on his squad and more on his opponent. When speaking with SEC Network, he shouted out Shane Beamer for the work he has done in Columbia.
“A really tough environment versus a really excellent coach. Everyone talking about Shane Beamer; heโs a great guy,” Stein said. “Heโs a great coach. He has an elite team, an elite quarterback. Unbelievable win from our guys.”
Kentucky does not normally win the types of contests that unfolded in Columbia on Saturday afternoon. The 17-point comeback victory is the largest on the road in Wildcat program history. Kentucky had also never won a road overtime affair prior to Saturday. Wildcat statistician Corey Price shared those — and many other interesting nuggets — on Twitter/X.
Stein and Co. return to Lexington in Week 6 for a battle with the LSU Tigers. A win over Lane Kiffin would give Kentucky legitimate College Football Playoff aspirations. The Wildcats and Tigers will kick off at 7:00 p.m. E.T. (ESPN) on Oct. 10.
