Will Stein explains why he is ‘very excited’ about incoming QB Kenny Minchey

The Kentucky Wildcats will be among the bevy of college football programs that are welcoming new quarterbacks for the 2026 season – as new Wildcats coach Will Stein will be relying on Notre Dame transfer Kenny Minchey this fall.
Minchey, who spent three seasons in South Bend before anchoring a 29-player transfer class in Lexington, has already earned high praise from his new coach.
“I’m very excited about Kenny,” Stein said Monday during Day 1 of SEC Media Days in Tampa. “It feels like he’s been in our system for a while. When we first started doing our walk-throughs, installing the offense, he just had great command and poise.”
Stein aims have Minchey and Kentucky thrive with an offense similar to the one he coached for three seasons at Oregon under head coach Dan Lanning – a unit that went 13-2 and put up 36.9 points per game while relying heavily on wide zone runs and deep receiving talent.
“I’m very impressed with (Minchey’s) football IQ, his intelligence, leadership, his poise,” Stein added. “Ultimately the intangibles of playing the position, he’s very accurate. Very accurate. I don’t believe that we should be okay with less than 70 percent as a passer. I don’t. Will it happen? I’m sure it will. I’m sure somebody will call me out if it doesn’t happen this year for us. That is the standard.”
