After he made his decision to leave Alabama for the NFL Draft, Tua Tagovailoa’s next step is when he will return to the field in a meaningful way.
Tagovailoa said he met with coach Nick Saban about five times in the last week, and also received medical advice on his decision. Tagovailoa is recovering from a dislocated hip and surgery, but has already improved from getting around on a scooter, to now a crutch.
“I’m optimistic that I’ll be able to play this upcoming season,” Tagovailoa said at a press conference. “But for me right now, I’m more so worried about getting better as soon as possible. See what I can do. If I can do a Pro Day, if I can’t do a Pro Day. Then really, it’s all dependent on what the doctors have to say to the teams and what the results come back.”
Tagovailoa already dealt with durability concerns after three ankle sprains in less than a year, but now the hip injury adds another degree of uncertainty.
Tagovailoa this past season was named the Co-Polynesian Player of the Year, an All-SEC second-team honoree by both the league coaches and the Associated Press, and became the Crimson Tide’s career touchdown responsibility leader with 96 (87 passing, nine rushing). His career passing touchdowns (87) passed AJ McCarron’s previous mark of 77.
