You’ve perhaps heard of Michael Jordan’s lucky UNC shorts or Tiger Woods’ red shirt, but you’ve never heard anything like Texas softball player Hannah Wells’ sports superstition.
During Monday’s WCWS Semifinals matchup between the Longhorns and Tennessee, ESPN’s Holly Rowe reported that “sources in the Texas dugout” told her that every time Wells sees a ladybug, she eats it for good luck.
Like, right then and there.
According to Rowe, the superstition dates back to Wells’ childhood, meaning she has likely eaten a considerable number of ladybugs. Rowe also reported that Wells had eaten a ladybug right before a home run in the SEC Tournament.

Wells is a freshman pitcher and also hits as Texas’ designated player. She’s started 9 games this year for the Longhorns and owns a .279 average with 38 hits, 15 home runs and 39 RBIs. On top of that, Wells boasts a 3.11 ERA and a 6-3 win-loss record from the circle.
The Longhorns are in decent shape as it currently stands. Texas beat Tennessee earlier on Monday and now holds a 3-0 lead in the top of the 5th inning, looking to advance to the Women’s College World Series finals with a win over the Volunteers.
